Suriya: Movies, Career, Achievements & More

Tamil cinema has been one of the dominant forces in the Indian film industry within the World Cinema culture. The Tamil film industry contains millions of specialists, ranging from directors and producers to light guys. However, the industry has gotten a serious boost due to veteran and legendary actors who gave stellar performances and made the audiences swoon.

An example of such a force is the Tamil actor Suriya. With passionate performances and a unique style and swag, there’s no doubt that Suriya’s movies are some of the most loved throughout the nation. This has helped him achieve a long and extremely successful journey in the film industry.

A Glimpse of His Past

Saravanan Sivakumar, better known by his stage name Suriya, is an Indian actor, producer, and television host who predominantly works in Tamil films.

On July 23, 1975, he was born as Saravanan to the Tamil actor Sivakumar and his wife, Lakshmi. He attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian High School in Chennai, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College. Before entering the film business, he worked in the apparel industry for several years. Suriya has two younger brothers and sisters, Karthi and Brindha. He is married to renowned filmstar Jyothika and has worked with her in seven films. The couple has a daughter named Diya and a boy named Dev.

Suriya is one of the most courteous, respectful, and cultural Tamil actors when it comes to the personality of a superstar. Before beginning his speech, he honours the crowd and fans whenever he appears on stage. When he was declared the best actor of the year for his work in Vaaranam Aayiram, Suriya fell on Ulaganaayagan Kamal Haasan’s feet on stage. This is one of the unforgettable moments that demonstrates Suriya’s admirable nature.

A Long & Successful Career

The first Suriya movie, Nerrukku Ner, was a huge success. But, none of his subsequent films was successful. However, he found success again when he worked with Vijay in one of the most popular Suriya movies, Friends. Before filmmaker Bala contacted him for a part in his next film named Nandha, his career seemed stagnant, and he had not had any major breaks. But, Nandha changed that and turned out to be the first of many successful movies, earning him his first Filmfare Award for best actor for his performance in this film.

The next movie that was a blockbuster was with Vikraman, and the film was titled Unnai Ninaithu. Suriya’s second solo hit film was Kaakha Kaakha, a film about a police officer’s life.

This film dramatically enhanced Suriya’s reputation and made him an instant superstar. This film had also fuelled tremendous conjecture over his connection with co-star Jyothika. This was due in part to the strong on-screen chemistry they had. Suriya’s portrayal of a happy-go-lucky villager in Pithamagan, co-starring Vikram, was lauded, demonstrating that he also had comedic abilities.

Suriya had two characters in the film Perazhagan, one as a boxer and the other as a disabled but confident phone booth attendant. Critics liked his portrayal of the disabled character, and he was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. When it comes to other popular Suriya movies, his work as a student leader in Aayitha Ezhuthu was also highly praised by the reviewers.

The year 2005 witnessed multiple blockbuster movies, including Aaru and Ghajini; thereafter, he co-founded the production business Studio Green with his cousin K.E.Gnavelraja. Suriya shaved his head for the role of a patient with short-term memory loss in the 2005 film Ghajini, which was one of the year’s most popular blockbusters. His third blockbuster collected more than Rs. 200 million at the box office. This is when he truly made his mark and was compared to renowned actors like Vikram, Vijay, and Ajith.

In 2008, he starred in the Gautham Menon-directed film Vaaranam Aayiram. He earned several accolades for this film. He made his Bollywood debut in the two-part political drama Rakta Charitra by Ram Gopal Varma.

Suriya was appointed the official host of STAR Vijay’s new game show, Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi, the Tamil adaptation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which aired from February 27, 2012, through July 12, 2012.

Brands Promoted By Suriya

Since 2006, Suriya has been the brand ambassador for TVS Motor, Aircel, and Sunfeast. Since 2010, he has sponsored the goods of Saravana Stores, Bharathi Cements, and Emami Navaratna. As of May 2011, he has signed a new contract with Nescafé, Zandu Balm, and the Close-Up (toothpaste) brand. As of 2012, Suriya sponsored Malabar Gold, the major jewelry firm in Malabar.

A Man Who Believes In Social Work

In addition to releasing a plethora of blockbuster movies, the actor founded the Agaram Foundation in 2008 to assist Tamil Nadu children who drop out of school early. With the Tamil Nadu Ministry of Education, he produced a short commercial film named Herova? Zerova? highlighting child poverty, child labor, and lack of education. Sivakumar wrote and produced the film, which also featured Joseph Vijay, R. Madhavan, and Jyothika.

Agaram supported the higher education of 159 poor students in 2010 in a variety of fields. With the conviction that an educated mind may not only alleviate social ills but also contribute to the community’s socio-economic development, Agaram Foundation strives to provide rural populations without access to excellent education with adequate learning opportunities.

In the name of the Sivakumar Charitable Trust, Suriya, with his father and brother, has contributed to the education of Sri Lankan Tamil youngsters. He is also interested in various humanitarian endeavors, like “Save The Tigers” campaign, which assists in the conservation and preservation of Tigers in India, and “REACH,” a non-profit organization that treats tuberculosis patients for free via supervised medicine regimens. Every year on his birthday, the actor does charitable activities in Tamil Nadu.
